When I retired as a research associate at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) in 2012, I immediately pursued my childhood dream: to learn oil painting. I took art classes at Forstall Art Center in Birmingham and have been learning and painting ever since. My subjects are primarily flowers and landscapes. I have been fascinated by the process of painting beautiful colors and shapes that can create a world beyond my expectations.
I want to thank the artists at Forstall Art Center including David Nichols, Barbara Davis, Terry Strickland, and Amy R. Peterson for guiding me through the wonderful world of oil painting. Lastly, I am grateful for my beloved husband of 50 years, Hiromi, for his ongoing feedback and strong support.

In 2023, a scroll painting by Jakuchu Ito was discovered in Europe. Jakuchu painted different vegetables with beautiful watercolors and shapes when he was 76 years old during the 18th century. He had a unique view of the world: vegetables are supreme among everything. By the 21st century, people recognized the importance of vegetables as a food resource. I wanted to try to paint different vegetables in the U.S. when I was the same age as Jakuchu (my maiden name is Ito).
